Description and Location

Cozumel is the most known island in Mexico, located at Quintana Roo state, to only 40 minutes going out from Playa del Carmen (Mayan Riviera); It has approximately 30.45 miles long, and 9.94 miles wide. Downtown Cozumel is located at the west side of the island and is where the big majority of the hotels are.

This island is supported on structures of Mayan coral reef, his name come from the word Cuzamil that in Mayan means " Swallows Isle", it keeps his pre-Hispanic and buccaneer origin. In this island arrive many kind cruises daily. In the center of the island you can fins the archaeological place of San Gervasio, where is the temple dedicated to Ixchel the great goddess of love, there are frequent tours from downtown where you can learn about the history of Cozumel .

The island is divided into North Zone, South Zone, and Downtown. Other one of the attractions is the lagoon of Chankanab which is located on the south; it is an interesting zone because the water is communicated by an underground tunnel with the sea where a natural aquarium with fauna and marine flora can be observed, also it is possible to observe the representative flora of the region. At 109 yards by the coast from the lagoon, there exist coral reefs and the most famous submarine statue of a virgin.
